Hi, I got v1.4.5 and English Vista. I try to embed Hebrew subtitles into XVID .avi file. The original .srt and .ssa files look both OK in Hebrew, but after I embed the .ssa one into my XVID and during a preview, all subtitles look gibberish (strange Latin characters instead of Hebrew ones). Also, not all font are selectable, e.g. I can't select any pure Hebrew font, like David, or Levenim: they just are not in the list. All these fonts are selectable via MS Office and other s/w. What's wrong? Please help.?!
Thanks jrfer, Doesn't help much . I use TT (like Times New Roman). Still, seems that when the text is displayed on image or merged into it, the shift to correct character set with the font set is incorrect.
Does it happen with all the subtitle files you try to use or just this particular one? Also, just as an experiment, try the previous version of ARC to see if it's any different.
We have had Hebrew using users for a long time so I am sure that Hebrew subs work.
We just need to figure out why they are not working for you.
Maybe Prozac might be more helpful.
You might try posting your log file, maybe their might be a clue to whats going on in it. regards..
jrfer.

Thanks. I really will try to install a prev. version to check. I actually tried only with one set of subs, but tried to encode it in diff. formats and fonts and encodings: the results s the same. By the way I tried to use another char set (Cyrillic): does the same mess. I tried to enter manually a Hebrew or Russian line (writing a new one inside the existing file). When you write it in the lower (status?) window it looks OK, but in the file body it appears like ?????? (no even Latin characters), and so it does within the movie body. Just drives me crazy... I do everything as described in numerous instruction forums, but... Try to find out what can it b, I'll try another version. Just let me know where can I get it. Thanks and Regards!
Hello mess18 and thanks for your inquiry! I am the Hebrew translator of ARC and a long-time user of the program. I have a lot of experience with Hebrew subtitles, and I have to say, I had 100% success so far. My only guess is that the subtitles have incorrect encoding settings - have you tried installing Subtitle Workshop and re-saving the file in this program? Also, maybe you have a local shortage of proper fonts - maybe try testing it on a different system. Also, I'd be glad if you posted a link to the file itself so I could test it out with my own configuration.
OK. I tried with 1.30: same. That I wrote about different encodings, formats. actually related to another subs preparation program, but at the end when I try to embed these subs with ARC, I get the same. Have no clue how to proceed...
To: munky-head Thanks! I tried this Workshop: doesn't look better. The file opened there looks all in giberish as well. When I just open a new file and type in Hebrew, it looks ??? inside subs file body. Look at the screenshot attached. By the way, the same is when another charset is selected, like Russian. All font are there in the Fonts folder. MS Word see and works with any of them no problem. My OS is Vista, maybe here is a clue?
After I have read a forum thread in Subtitle Workshop, I've got an idea. I have changed the locale in my Windows to Hebrew (see attached pic). It was English before. After Windows restart, all seems OK when selecting Hebrew charset in the Workshop (both file and movie preview with the subs). ARC is OK as well. But, if another charset is chosen, still it is giberish or ???? is displayed. Explanation to the locale in Win says this setting is for programs that do not support Unicode (see attached). Does it mean ARC and Workshop do not? It explains why another charset is not shown: it may require to change the locale to it before. Any ideas?
Really wierd. I am guessing you've got some local problem, as I am also using English Vista with Hebrew settings for non-default languages. Try saving the sub file you've created and uploading it. I'm wondering if your file will work on my system.
